Biofeedback is a stress reduction technique involving the use of technology to amplify signals from your body so that you can be more aware of how your body responds to stress.

With this enhanced awareness you can learn to better control your response to stress.

How does it work?

You are connected to a machine that provides both you and your therapist with auditory and visual information about the levels of tension in your body. Through the use of techniques learned during treatment sessions you will learn to voluntarily control this tension.

With repeated practice the biofeedback instrument is no longer needed.

You will learn to be more aware of thoughts and feelings that lead to tension in your body.

With this knowledge you can develop new habits that will help you manage stress more effectively.

Importantly, you also learn to develop increased control over your own body and health.

Does it hurt?

No. In fact, generally people find the experience pleasant. The instrument only reads and amplifies information from the body (like a doctor’s stethoscope). It does not put any electricity into the body.

Is it hard to do? Does it take long?

Most people learn the techniques quickly and begin to see benefits in only a couple of weeks. A commitment to following through with home-based practice is very important. While each patient is individually evaluated, most conditions are treated in six to fifteen sessions lasting approximately 55 minutes each.
